Oil-ground is white matter used for fundamental paints. Its purpose is to smoothen the surface and to create the optical basis of a painting. Oil-ground consists of white paint in powder, chalk, polymerated linseed oil, varnish and turpentine. Before colours are applied, the oil-ground must be perfectly dry.
